Hiroshima Armchair

The Hiroshima Armchair, designed by Naoto Fukasawa in 2008. Fukasawa's design philosophy emphasizes simplicity and the natural beauty of materials, resulting in pieces that are both timeless and functional. The Hiroshima Armchair is renowned for its seamless integration of traditional craftsmanship with modern design principles, reflecting a commitment to quality and understated elegance .

BEHIND THE DESIGN

Interesting facts you might not know

Fukasawa believes that design should fade into experience. Good design should feel natural and easy to use, without making you think about it. The Hiroshima Chair perfectly showcases this with its simplistic and versatile design.

Fukasawa is best known for iconic designs such as Muji’s wall-mounted CD player, the Infobar mobile phone, and Maruni’s finely crafted wooden furniture, which embody his belief in design that harmonizes with human behaviour.

In addition to his practice, he is a professor at Tama Art University and a leading voice in contemporary design, influencing how everyday objects can embody beauty, function, and subtle emotional resonance.

SPOT THE Hiroshima Armchair

Here are famous places where you can find

The G7 Summit, 2023 in Hiroshima

  • Hiroshima, Japan

There was a deliberate effort to use furniture and materials from Japanese designers and local Japanese producers at the summit. The chosen furniture needed to be both functional for official meetings and visually representational of Japanese design and hospitality. The HIROSHIMA Armchairs welcomed the leaders for the Working Lunch which marked the beginning of the G7 summit meetings.

Kew House

  • Richmond, London, UK

In the restructured Victorian home formerly part of a stable yard, McLaren Excell has created a flow of interlocking volumes, daylight, and material contrasts that let architecture breathe. In this quietly sculptural environment, the Hiroshima Chair by Naoto Fukasawa for Maruni stands out: its gently curved back and slender arms, crafted in warm wood, echo the tactile richness of the extension’s pale masonry and oak paneling. Photographed by Simone Bossi, this setting highlights how a well-designed chair can anchor space without overpowering it.
